What are some tips for parents whose cadets will be going off to Recruit Training?
1) Just review the seabag list as soon as possible to have time to get required items that are not already available. Don't spend time worrying about the stuff that you might forget to pack for them ... after all, aren't they suppose to pack their own seabag? There is a life lesson to be learnt by them here....The less you do for them, the more they do for themselves.
2) Follow the training facebook page and don't stress out if you don't see their picture every day.
3) Get ready to attend the graduation ceremony...YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS TEARS-OF-PRIDE GRADUATION EVENT! This event will be the most memorable graduation event of all the training your cadet will be attending.
4) Three very important items for check-out are: service jacket, photo ID, and sea bag.
5) After they get back from Recruit Training (aka boot camp), give your cadet(s) SPACE & TIME to get back to theIr home routine at their own readjusting pace ... some will not talk much (like mine) and some will sleep a lot for days (like mine) ...BUT THEY ARE JUST FINE ...JUST LET THEM BE ...FOLLOW THEIR CUES ... Remember, for some cadets, this might be the very 1st time they are away from the comfort of home for an extended time and this is not an ordinary training for young teenagers.
6) The most helpful thing you can do for your cadet after recruit training trip is help with THEIR LAUNDRY so they can repack the seabag for the next training trip! Trust me, this might be therapeutic for you as parents.
